Zion Baptist Church
Zion Baptist Church, located in Alexandria VA, is one of the oldest Black Churches in the local vicinity. In 1864, a small band of Christian believers decided to come together to secure a place where they could worship God according to the dictates of their conscience. The faithful believers established Zion Baptist Church as one of the first black congregations in Alexandria shortly after the Union Army troops occupation during the Civil War in 1861, near an area known as "Zion Hill," a longtime African-American neighborhood. The trend of the African-American population during that time greatly increased along the Potomac River, Wilkes Street, and as far as Mount Eagle Plantation near Hunting Creek in Alexandria, Virginia. Zion is known for it's heart and hand of love for its support in leadership and in missions, home, state and foreign. Various ministries provide service, support, fellowship and outreach to many in the church and the community. Zion is well known for its preaching ministry and excellent music ministry.
The mission of Zion Baptist Church is to bring persons into a saving and redemptive relationship with Jesus Christ. We are a caring, healing and welcoming community that proclaims and celebrates the love of Jesus Christ, lives as God’s servants and seeks justice for all people. We are also a reconciling in Christ congregation that believes the gospel is God’s gift to all people to be shared unconditionally — without regard to age, race, gender, socioeconomic status, or physical/mental abilities.
GOSPEL - The Good News of the Gospel is that Christ Jesus laid down His own life on a cross where he bore the sins of all mankind. He was resurrected and ascended into heaven, from which He is coming back for all who are saved. In Old Testament times, the sheep would die for the shepherd. However, in the Gospel, the Shepherd died for the sheep. (IS. 53:7; Acts 8:32). Anyone who confesses with his mouth that Jesus is Lord and believes in his heart that God raised Him from the dead will be saved (Romans 10:9).
Heavenly Father, I have sinned against you. I want forgiveness for all my sins. I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God and my Saviour who died on the cross for me and rose again. Father, I give you my life to do with as you wish. I want Jesus Christ to come into my life and into my heart. This I ask in Jesus's name. Amen.
